Description

Greetings! This year, PrYSM celebrates our Sweet Sixteen! November marks over a decade and a half of Peace, Love, Power! PrYSM is the only organization in Rhode Island committed to training, developing, and supporting Southeast Asian young people, queer and trans youth of color, and survivors of police violence to become leaders and changemakers. In these tough political times, PrYSM’s steadfast dedication to liberating our communities from state violence through direct action, community programs, and movement building is vital.

WE PASSED THE COMMUNITY SAFETY ACT! On Thursday, June 1st 2017, Providence City Council voted 13-1 to pass the most comprehensive racial profiling legislation in this country! However, our work is not over. We are amidst planning our 2018 rollout work, which, following the ordinance’s passage into law in January 2018, will includes ensuring proper implementation; educating our community and our bases about their new rights; and supporting other municipalities with similar policy campaigns for police accountability.

We now have an amazing tool to hold Providence police accountable to their profiling practices. But we know, only we can save ourselves. We build strength in our neighborhoods through cop watch by the Community Defense Project. We hold a mothly, loving space for young people with After Hourz. Rising Sisters is a brand new program that offers a space for community building through gender and queer justice lens. The Organizing Circle is building a campaign to disrupt and end the school-to-prison pipeline.

The Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM) was founded on November 8th, 2001, when a series of repeated Cambodian gang fights and resulting deaths inspired youth and local college students to fight for positive change in the community. Our first campaign was to fight the deportations of Cambodian American refugees, who were being sent back to the country from which they fled a genocide and civil war. Though our campaign goals have shifted over the years to reflect the changing needs of our base, we continue to fight the criminalization of our community and honor our refugee roots. Today, PrYSM is a 501c3 non-profit youth organization which supports Southeast Asian (SEA) youth to become leaders, organizers, and critical thinkers, by offering educational workshops, leadership opportunities, mentorship, and oversight of youth-led community organizing projects. For the past fourteen years, PrYSM has provided SEA youth with the tools they need to design and run campaigns aimed at shifting oppressive systems through concrete policy change.

Providence Youth Student Movement envisions a strong, healthy SEA community free from state, street, and interpersonal violence. PrYSM organizes at the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation by centering youth, women, queer, and people of color leadership in our campaigns, our organization, and our communities. PrYSM mobilizes SEA youth, families, and allies to build grassroots power and organize collectively for social justice.

Peace: We must confront and end cycles of violence in our communities. PrYSM must work towards transforming our communities by building safe spaces that foster accountability, healing, and dialogue.

Love: Social justice, community organizing, and institutional change must be rooted in compassion and unity. Love for ourselves, our families, and our communities must guide PrYSM’s work, actions, and collective vision.

Power: We must shift power into the hands of the people through direct action, base building, community coalitions, and youth organizing. PrYSM builds power by centering the experiences of the most oppressed and developing local grassroots leadership.
